Lesson #76 – 3/3/2018
Deuteronomy 31:6 – “So be
strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the
lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor
abandon you.”
Hebrews 11:1-2 - 1”Now faith
is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
2For by it the men of old gained approval.”
Psalm 18:30 - God’s way is
perfect. All the lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to
him for protection.”
We have been talking about
grace, specifically, God’s grace toward us. We have seen that our Lord is full
of grace. We have also seen that from that fullness, that all of us have
received “grace upon grace.”
We are in John 1:15-18, where
we see grace upon grace in verse 16.
15(John bore witness about
him, and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me
ranks before me, because he was before me.'") 16For from his fullness
we have all received, grace upon grace. 17For the law was given through
Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen
God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.
Our Lord shows grace toward
us, then he shows us some more grace, then He keeps piling it on, which equals
grace upon grace. And, last week we handed out a series of verses that can
provide us with an example of his grace. The verses were put together from four
different gospel accounts of the same historical event. We hope that everyone
had a chance to read through these verses this past week. It is too long to put
up on the board, so if you didn’t get one last week we have a few extras here
tonight.
At the beginning of each of
the sections in each of the gospels, most bibles say something like, “Jesus
feeds the 5,000.” Normally, when people look at these passages of scripture
they focus on Jesus feeding the 5,000 people food. And, normally they focus on
the physical food that was provided these people. But, Jesus didn’t just feed
these people physical food.
It is true that Jesus and his
disciples needed a break. They headed out to have some down time and to relax
and recuperate. However, Jesus had compassion on the people who came by foot to
meet them, because they were hungry spiritually. He knew that they needed
spiritual food, and he wanted to fulfill their spiritual needs. In the
beginning, he taught them so that he could satisfy their spiritual hunger.
Then, later in the day they began to get physically hungry. Even when he met
their physical needs by performing a miracle, he was still teaching the disciples
about their future mission of feeding people spiritually.
The disciples were hungry,
tired, and had been faced with crowds and needed a break. However, when they
suggested that they call it a day, Christ said no, that there was still some
teaching that needed to be done. Christ said that the disciples should not send
these people away, and then told the disciples to feed all of these people.
How were they going to feed
all these people? They would need a full year’s salary to be able to afford the
amount of food these people required. Since they were required to feed them,
then they had a problem. They didn’t have any money, but notice that it is one
of the first things they think about when faced with this issue. The solution
is standing right in front of them, and they still wonder how they will
accomplish this.
We often do the same thing.
These men had seen and we have learned about Jesus’ miracles, yet we often
don’t look to God for the solution, we try to come up with the solution on our
own. They (and by application, we) need to learn a great lesson. We need to
learn, and remember God’s ability, and God’s power. We also need to learn what
are we studying tonight … yes, that is right, grace. We need to first learn,
then remember, and then apply the fact that we have God’s grace available to
us.
Our Lord wanted to see if
their faith had developed. Here, in an impossible situation, what would they
do? They needed to remember that with God nothing is impossible. It was time
for them to build their confidence in him, and stop depending upon human
resources. It is a matter of learning to have a divine outlook on
circumstances, instead of having a human viewpoint. They needed to not just
know about God’s grace, they also needed to come to the point where they
couldn’t forget about God’s grace. Here, the disciples are skeptical. Our Lord
knows that after the disciples become apostles that they will come across
people who are skeptical. When they do, they will think of this lesson our Lord
is giving them. They need to get their eyes off of the circumstances and onto
the Lord. And, in the future they will have to teach other people the exact
same lesson.
One of the disciples that was
present with our Lord at this time was John. When he wrote verse 16 in our
passage, he demonstrates that he learned this lesson. He saw that Jesus was
full of grace. He saw that he heaped grace upon grace, not only in this
situation but in many others as well.
As we move through this
account of the 5,000 people sitting in the grass on a hill, the disciples start
getting it and start listening to Jesus. They start to focus on the Lord. The
Lord is present with them, and guess what, the Lord is present with us as well.
Christ provided all of us with another example as he looks to heaven, and
blesses the food. There is a passage of scripture that relates here, it is from
James 1:16-18:
16So don’t be misled, my dear
brothers and sisters. 17Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down
to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never
changes or casts a shifting shadow. 18He chose to give birth to us by giving us
his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.
This is an amazing verse from
the standpoint that a lot of the things found here are things that we have
recently studied, which allows us to understand the whole concept it teaches
without having to analyze it too deeply. Obviously, this is a verse that
screams grace as well, but the portion that relates to what we are going
through is, “every good and perfect gift comes down to us from heaven.”
Okay, so Jesus feeds 5,000
plus people spiritually, then feeds them physically by performing a miracle.
The miracle points to his messiahship, as well as to his deity. One thing that
is taught clearly here, and the one thing that relates to the phrase “grace
unto grace”, is the fact that we can see that grace is multiplication. The grace
keeps coming until they are all satisfied. And, even after they are completely
satisfied there are still left overs. The amazing thing is that the left overs
alone exceeded what they started with. In the end, each of the disciples had
their own basket of bread and fish.
The bread and the fish are
multiplied, but from the spiritual standpoint the spiritual food is also
multiplied into spiritual growth. God’s Word does not return void. However,
when there is no spiritual food, there is no spiritual growth. In the future,
the disciples will provide spiritual food, and it will come back to them as a
full basket of blessing again. The disciples dished out the physical food from
the Lord to the 5,000; and they will soon be serving up the spiritual food that
they have also received from the Lord. Those that they serve can take as much
or as little as they want. They are only the waiters bringing the food, and
when they do they demonstrate grace in action; grace upon grace.
Throughout the bible God
demonstrates, and reveals His grace. Christ had compassion on these people, and
Christ has compassion on us. He will feed us until we are satisfied, and he
provides us with more than enough. So, if we are interested, we can be fed
until the day we die. It is a gift of God, not of works, but through grace, as
Ephesians 2:8&9 says:
8For by grace you have
been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of
God, 9not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
John 1:17 - 17For the law was
given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
People, who don’t know any
better, often criticize Christianity as being all about rules, and yes there
are guidelines we are given on how to live our lives. Moses brought down from the
mountain the 10 commandments from God, and there are many more commandments
than those 10. However, Jesus Christ brought us the truth of how to live our
life in light of those commandments, and he brought us grace. No one has been
able to meet all of the commandments on their own, we all fall short. But, with
Christ and with his grace, we are able to live the Christian life through his
example.
John 1:18 - 18No one has ever
seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.
We can’t see God. But, God the
Father sent His son in human form to make God known to us. If we have seen
Christ, then we have seen the Father, as it says in John 14:6-7
6Jesus said to
him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through me. 7If you had known me, you would have known my
Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him."
We learn about God through
Christ, the manifest person of the trinity. All three members of the trinity
are perfect righteousness and justice or holiness. All three members of the
trinity show us grace. All three members of the trinity are love. They are all
ever present, all knowing, and all powerful. But, only one member of the
trinity came down and became man while at the same time was undiminished deity.
Only one was sent to reveal the Godhead to us. As we get to know Christ we also
are getting to know God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. A perfect plan was
created for us, the execution of that plan is possible, and the power to
execute that plan was given to us as well.
Does God provide grace, love,
and mercy? Yes. Does He also provide judgment and condemnation? Yes. Is he the
same yesterday, today, and forever? Yes. So, it is true, the sovereignty of God
and the free will of man co-exist during human history. If we choose to reject
God and His ways, then He chooses judgment, discipline, and condemnation for
us. If we choose His way, His truth, and His life, then He chooses grace, love,
and mercy for us. And, the pivotal question that we all must answer for
ourselves is what do we think of Jesus Christ. Then after we answer that question,
if we accept his free gift, is what do we think of his thinking, the Word of
God, the teaching in the bible. Will we follow it, or will we follow our own
desires and lusts?
Let’s pray.
